Stud Poker Glossary
The terminology used in Caribbean Stud Poker and casinos
in general can be a little confusing to the novice player. To help
make sense of everything I've listed some commonly used terms and
their definitions.
- ante
- Usually noted as a square or circle on the table, Ante represents
the wager every player must place in order for the cards to be
dealt.
- bet
- Represented on the table by a treasure chest, circle or square,
the Bet is a wager exactly double the Ante amount and is required
to "call" the
dealer.
- bluffing
- In Caribbean Poker this is sometimes used to describe a player
who stays on a losing hand with hopes that the dealer will not
qualify. Not the same as a true bluff.
- calling the dealer
- Playing out your hands. The opposite of folding.
- drop slot
- Slot on the table where a player places a one-unit wager for
the progressive jackpot.
- folding
- Surrendering your hand if you don't think you can beat the dealer.
Opposite of calling.
- progressive jackpot
- Side bet that has no impact on the game itself where you win
all or part of the jackpot based on the hands you receive. As
the name implies the value of the jackpot increases with each hand
played.
- progressive meter
- Display located on the table that informs the players where the
jackpot is at any given time.
- push
- A situation where neither the player nor the house wins and the
wagers are returned.
- qualifying
- When the dealer posseses at least an Ace-King in his hand it
is considered qualified. The dealer must have a qualified hand
for the game to be fully decided.
- side bet
- Refers to the Progressive Jackpot wager.
