Caribbean Stud Poker Rules

Caribbean Stud Poker is played on a table similar to a Blackjack table. One 52-card deck is used and up to seven players can play at a time. Atop the table you will find two betting squares or circles and one drop slot for the progressive jackpot. Please note that the progressive jackpot wager is completely optional and has no impact on the actual game itself. There is also a display similar to what you would see on a Progressive Meterprogressive slot machine that shows you the current jackpot amount. Winning the jackpot or a portion thereof depends on what kind of hand you hold. You can see the pay schedule for the different hands on the chart below. The progressive jackpot is simply a lottery but many people are attracted to Caribbean Stud Poker for this feature alone.

In order for the game to begin you must place a wager on the Ante circle. You might consider this the "fee" for being dealt five cards. You may at this time also put a coin in the progressive jackpot slot. If you were at a bricks and mortar casino the dealer would press a button allowing the coin in the progressive jackpot slot to drop through. Once the coins are deposited a red light will illuminate showing which players are eligible for the progressive jackpot.

Five cards will be dealt to the players face down and you must keep them private. If you are playing at an online casino this is irrelevant. However, if you are playing at a bricks and mortar casino they are particularly picky about keeping your hands private since seeing other players cards could potentially lower the house advantage. The dealer also receives five cards except four are dealt face down while the last one is dealt face up.

At this point in the game you can do one of two things:

  1. You can "call" if you think your hand can beat the dealer. If you decide to "call" the dealer you must put exactly double your Ante wager on the Bet circle.
  2. You can surrender your hand and give up your Ante if you do not think you can beat the dealer. At this point the dealer will take your cards face down and put them into a discard bin while collecting your Ante. After this series of events you are finished playing the current hand.

After the dealer has collected all of the Ante bets from the players that decided to fold, he will then turn over his four remaining cards and put together the best poker hand possible. At this point you can compare your hand to the dealer's hand but there is one caveat: The dealer must have an Ace-King hand or better or it is considered "Not Qualified."

* Dealer Must Qualify To Win
* Payouts Are Per Dollar Wagered

If the dealer's hand is deemed "Not Qualified" the Ante gets paid 1-1 (you get one dollar for every dollar you bet) and the Bet wagers are returned. However, if the dealer's hand is considered "Qualified" (Ace-King hand or better) the Ante gets paid 1-1 and the Bet wager gets paid in accordance with the odds in the payout schedule. Needless to say if your hand does not beat the dealer's hand you lose both the Ante and the Bet wagers.

In the event that the player and the dealer have the same hand, the remaining cards would be compared to see who has the high card. On the rare occasion that both the dealer and the player have the exact same cards then it is considered a push and no money is exchanged.

Keep in mind that if you elected to play the progressive jackpot you will still win the bonus award with certain hands regardless of whether you win or lose to the dealer and even if the dealer doesn't qualify.

A Few Notes...
If you play at a Bricks and Mortar Casino and you win all or a portion of the progressive jackpot you must remember to tell the dealer you won in the event that he does not qualify. If the dealer fails to qualify he will pay you 1-1 on the Ante and collect all of the cards face down and place them back into the shuffle machine. It is up to you to inform the dealer you won before he collects your cards.

Be aware that some casinos place a limit on the maximum you can win on a "call" Bet. For example, let's say you wager $150 on the Ante and $300 on the Bet. If you receive a Straight Flush you should be entitled to $300 X 50 = $15,000 (On the Bet Portion). However, if the casino has a maximum table payout limit of $10,000 then that is all you will get. Avoid playing at casinos that have a cap on the payout since this puts the odds heavily in their favor.
