Poker Hand Rankings

In order to effectively play Caribbean Stud Poker you must be familiar with Poker hand rankings to know "what beats what." A 52-card deck is composed of four suits: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs. There are thirteen ranks in each suit with Ace being the highest ranking card all the way down to the two or deuce. Here is the complete order from lowest to highest:

2
3
4
5

8

10
Jack (J)
Queen (Q)
King (K)
Ace (A)

Hand rankings are arranged in order of probability. The rarer a hand is the less likely you are to receive one thus the higher it is ranked. The following is a list of the hand rankings from highest to lowest:

ROYAL FLUSH
Royal Flush

A Royal Flush is an Ace-high straight flush. Obviously the most rare hand you would be lucky to come across this in your lifetime. There are only four possible combinations for this hand:

Royal Flush Combinations

STRAIGHT FLUSH
Straight Flush

This hand is made up of five sequenced cards all of the same suit. If two people have a straight flush then the highest ranked card determines who wins.

FOUR-OF-A-KIND
Four-Of-A-Kind

This hand is having four cards of the same rank with one unrelated card as the fifth card. This hand is sometimes referred to as "quads." Higher ranked hands beat lower ranked hands.

FULL HOUSE
Full House

A Full House is simply three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. The overall rank of this hand is determined by the three cards, not the pair.

FLUSH
Flush

A Flush is five cards of the same suit. If two players have a flush the winner is determined by the high card. For example a King-high Flush beats a 10-high Flush.

STRAIGHT
Straight

A Straight is formed by five cards in sequence but not of the same suit. If two players have a straight then the high card in the sequence would determine the winner.

THREE-OF-A-KIND
Three-Of-A-Kind

Three cards of the same rank along with two unrelated cards is called Three-Of-A-Kind.

TWO PAIR
Two Pair

Two of one rank and two of another rank. If two players have Two Pair the highest ranking pair would be compared. If they are the same the next highest ranking pair would be compared. If all cards are the same to this point the highest ranking unrelated card would determine the winner.

ONE PAIR
One Pair

Two of one rank and any three other cards. Note that if two players have the same pair, the highest of the other three cards is the determining factor. If that card is the same, the next highest card determines the winner and so forth.

HIGH CARDS
High Cards

Five unrelated cards where the highest rank determines the winner.
